Under the Immigration Control and Refugee-Recognition Act they are authorized to engage only in activities related to this purpose. However, if they are obliged to work part time in order to cover school expenses or other needs, they may be allowed to do so within certain limits (28 hours per week for regular students and 14 hours per week for auditors; 8 hours a day during a long vacation). Once a part-time job has been decided, permission is required for activities other than those permitted under student status (permission is not required for part-time employment by Tohoku University), so please apply to the Immigration Bureau that has jurisdiction over the area where you live.
