Graduate School of Veterinary Medicine (Doctor’s Program Only) Major Veterinary Medicine The Graduate School of Veterinary Medicine, which is affiliated with one of Japan’s leading animal hospital, aims to train researchers and educators of a global caliber as well as highly specialized clinicians. We also offer a refresher course for practitioners. Our research and education is divided into 6 fields: Veterinary Comparative Morphology, Veterinary Comparative Function Studies, Veterinary Contagion Control Studies, Preventive Veterinary Medicine, Veterinary Condition Control Studies, and Veterinary Condition Information Studies. The facilities at our affiliated Animal Medical Center (ANMEC) and the Laboratory Animal Research Center, which are both located on the Shonan Campus, are utilized to study advanced specialist skills and practical techniques. ANMEC is equipped with the latest imaging facilities, including MRI and CT, and boasts extensive clinical research and training systems, making it one of the leading research institutions in its field in Japan. The scope of veterinary medicine has expanded from farm animals, companion animals and laboratory animals to include wild animals and exhibition species, and is now closely involved with the study of such areas as contagion between animals and humans, and the mechanisms behind the rise of new diseases, the resurgence of old diseases and the prevention of such diseases. At our Graduate School, we also teach our researchers to freely apply state-of-the-art methods from molecular biology and genetic engineering to advanced veterinary research. Just as all other academic fields, veterinary science must strive for an international level of research, and veterinary researchers and clinicians must be able to respond to the increasing globalization, specialization and complexity of our society with a broadly based, flexible and comprehensive judgment coupled with practical skills. In order to meet the demands for such professionals, in 2000, the Graduate School of Veterinary Medicine increased the number of graduate students from 2 to 6.
