Beginning in the first year, students take courses in English for General Academic Purposes from the Center for Education of Global Communication (CEGLOC). Thereafter, they take courses in EMP from the medical faculty, including core courses taught by native-English EMP specialists. Many of the EMP courses are taught entirely in English, and learning takes place through a variety of approaches—lecture, small group, e-learning, and role-playing.     English for General Academic Purposes（全学共通科目としての英語） In the first year, students acquire a solid base in English for General Academic Purposes, taking two courses, English Reading Skills and English Presenting Skills.     Clinical Communication in English 1, 2 (CCE-1, 2) This two-part EMP core course is offered during the second year. The focus is on patient-doctor communication. In CCE-1 (spring semester), students learn history-taking in English. In CCE-2 (fall semester), they rotate through 3 modules: Conducting a Physical Examination, Explaining a Diagnosis, and Reading and Writing Medical Records. Active learning takes place through role-play simulation. The course is conducted entirely in English.     Medical English Terminology This EMP core course is taken during the latter half of the second year and throughout the third year. Students learn the basic medical terminology needed for medical study, research, and communication. Lectures are organized around different body systems and are timed in the curriculum to coincide with medical lectures on the same body systems, thus enhancing the dynamism and efficiency of learning. Learning takes place through a combination of lectures and e-learning components. The course is conducted entirely in English.     Clinical Skills Training in English              This workshop-based course is embedded in the Clinical Communication component of the medical curriculum (first half of the fourth year). In parallel with the OSCE training workshops, students rehearse the doctor-patient encounter with a simulated patient, but in English. Learning also takes place through self-reflection and peer-feedback, with group discussion on topics such as gathering medical information, building rapport, and showing empathy, as well as on cross-cultural differences in medicine. The workshop is conducted entirely in English.     Preparation for IELTS / Preparation for TOEFL        These courses prepare students to obtain the standardized English test scores they need to participate in the overseas clerkships or other types of study/work abroad.     Practical English for Lab Techniques The focus is on English for Medical Research Purposes. Students prepare an article on a research topic of their choice to submit for publication in a peer-reviewed journal. This course is offered in the fifth year and is required for students who select the research track.
