The ceremony was held on February 8 at the University of York’s Central Hall in conjunction with the School of Physics, Engineering and Technology’ s graduation ceremony. The proceedings took place in a lively atmosphere, while following the traditional etiquette. In his speech, President Ohno expressed his gratitude for his family and the many colleagues and students who have supported him throughout his career. He also touched on the kinds of joint activities that have been conducted by researchers at the two universities and reflected on his past work. President Ohno concluded his speech by sharing his belief that the conferral of the honorary degree was both an acknowledgement of his achievements and a call to duty. He said that both he and the graduating students must work together and answer the call to use their knowledge and skills to contribute to the world. Prior to the ceremony, President Ohno met with Prof. Charlie Jeffery, the Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of York, as well as other representatives. They discussed matters such as the future expansion of the study abroad program that sends Tohoku University students to the University of York, in addition to the development of other student and research exchanges. During his visit, President Ohno also gave a lecture entitled ‘Spintronics for Green Society and Beyond’ at a seminar for faculty and students in the School of Physics, Engineering and Technology. The seminar, which was attended by more than 40 faculty members and students and closed with a productive question-and-answer session, indicated a high level of interest in President Ohno’s research. These events and activities at the University of York are expected to contribute to the further development of research and academic exchanges between the two universities.
