In the Strategic Energy Plan and the Long-term Strategy under the Paris Agreement, which were approved by the Cabinet in October 2021, it is stated that Japan will further reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by leveraging its technological strengths, thereby contributing to the realization of carbon neutrality on a global basis. For example, Japan is promoting business-led international expansion of environmentally sound technologies and products through such efforts as market creation, human resource development and system construction. It is also making contributions to the reduction and absorption of greenhouse gas emissions in developing countries by disseminating advanced decarbonization technologies and implementing relevant measures. Against this backdrop, NEDO carries out international demonstration projects utilizing the Joint Crediting Mechanism. More specifically, Japan’s advanced low-carbon technologies and systems are introduced and demonstrated overseas. The reduction or absorption of greenhouse gas emissions due to such technologies and systems is then quantified and announced as part of Japan’s international contribution. In parallel, NEDO, in collaboration with the Japanese government, works to expand the use of such technologies and systems by cooperating in the development of relevant policies in partner countries, thereby contributing to the reduction of global greenhouse gas emissions and achieving the Paris Agreement’s goals. Project pamphlet (Available only in Japanese) The Program to Facilitate Overseas Promotion of Low Carbon Technology Through the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) is an extension of the Global Warming Mitigation Technology Promotion Project (FY2011 - FY2017), the JCM Demonstration and Verification Projects (FY2017), and the Program to Facilitate Private Sector-Led Promotion of Low Carbon Technology Overseas (FY2018 - FY2022), which NEDO has been carrying out as part of its global warming countermeasures.
