Many companies delete much of their data at the end of the business day. In part, this may be due to a lack of adequate data storage facilities, but the major reason is that the sheer volume of data accumulated is so large that most companies cannot figure out how to put it to use. The purpose of this symposium is to encourage the effective utilization of such high-volume business data by introducing examples of its use in the field of econophysics and discussing how to construct effective institutional frameworks for surveying and analyzing data. The symposium will have three feature presentations: (1) an analysis of the characteristics of economic networks using data on business partnerships and capital alliances; (2) an analysis of fluctuations in asset prices using transaction-by-transaction data (or tick-by-tick data) on foreign exchange rates and stock prices; and (3) an analysis of fluctuations in retail prices and sales volumes using data such as point-of-sales data on retail transactions. The presentations will be followed by a panel discussion based on the three analyses and focusing on questions such as the following: (1) What types of business data seem most suited for use? In particular, what problems related to the current financial crisis and economic recession can be dealt with by applying these analytical methods to business data? (2) What sort of institutional frameworks are necessary to ensure ongoing accumulation of business data? (3) How should we look at the relationship between business data and government statistics? In addition to academic researchers who conduct analyses using business data, our panel discussion will also include a corporate manager and a compiler of government statistics to provide greater perspective from the public and private sectors.
