Cancer patients should also be aware of high blood pressure – Four universities, including Saga University, have reported studies from domestic big data analysis. A team of researchers from four universities – the University of Tokyo, Saga University, Kagawa University and Shiga University of Medical Science – analyzed large epidemiological data on the Japanese population and found that cancer patients have an increased risk of heart failure from the stage of mild hypertension, which is lower than the Japanese diagnostic criteria for hypertension. This is the first large-scale epidemiological study in the world to report that elevated blood pressure is associated with the risk of cardiovascular events (such as heart failure) in cancer patients. The extent to which hypertension affects the prognosis of cancer patients is unknown, but this study suggests that adequate blood pressure control is important, even for cancer patients.
